Police investigating the death of a 40-year-old man whose body was found in a Wellington apartment yesterday will not know until Monday how he died.

Police are still treating the man's death as suspicious.

The post mortem was due to be held today, but had been delayed until Monday, police said.

A resident found the body in the carpark of Arlington Apartments on Hopper St in the central Wellington suburb of Mt Cook, about 1.20pm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Donna Howard of the Wellington CIB said police were still contacting the man's family.

"There is family everywhere so I won't be releasing his name."

She would not say if the man had injuries on his body but said there was no sign of a weapon.

"We are keeping an open mind and are investigating this and will know more with the post mortem on Monday."

She said there was no sign the man had been robbed.

"There is nothing to indicate that at all.

"All I am going to say at this stage is that it is an unexplained death and we are doing our inquiries."

She said police were continuing with an area canvas and wanted to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in Hopper St near the apartments about 1pm yesterday.
