A German tourist has been seriously assaulted in Queenstown.

The 24-year-old man was bashed and knocked unconscious in Shotover Street about 3am.

His wallet was stolen during the attack.

He was treated in hospital for facial injuries and suspected neck injury.

Police inquiries, with public assistance and the use of CCTV footage, have led to the arrests of two people just after four this afternoon.

Police say they are aged 24 and 21, and had recently arrived from the North Island and are currently working in Queenstown.

They will appear in court on Monday.
