The victim was left with multiple compound fractures and lacerations to his legs and is recovering in Wellington Hospital, Ms Waugh said.

The vehicle, believed to be a blue Toyota Rav 4, drove off and was seen a short time later on Lyttelton Avenue near McDonalds in Porirua, Ms Waugh said.

Police appealed to anyone who saw the hit-and-run or a person or people walking away from a blue Toyota Rav 4 near McDonalds on Lyttelton Ave sometime after 5.20pm to contact them.
