A 65-year-old woman died instantly when her car and a light van collided in the Northland town of Te Hana, just north of Wellsford, today.
Police said the cause of the accident was still being investigated but it appeared the woman, the sole occupant of the car, turned in front of the van on State Highway 1.
The woman, from Te Hana, had yet to be formally identified and her name would be released when relatives had been told.
The driver of the van was shaken but not hurt.
Police closed a section of SH1 while the wreckage was moved and measurements were taken.
