Visitors flock to army museum to see medals

Visitors wanting to catch a glimpse of Waiouru Army Museum's 96 newly returned war medals flocked through the doors over Labour Weekend.

The medals, including nine Victoria Crosses, were stolen in December last year and returned in February after a reward of up to $300,000 was paid.

The medals were put back on public display after an official ceremony last Tuesday.

Waiouru Army Museum marketing manager Nicola Bennet said more than 1500 people walked through the doors to see the medals over the long weekend.

The 12 sets of medals are being housed in the newly built Valour Alcove and extra security measures have been put in place to protect them.

Museum director Colonel Ray Seymour said staff were delighted to have the medals back in their place of honour.

After a long hunt for the thieves, two men were arrested and charged with burglary two weeks ago.

The men, aged 37 and 39, are due to reappear in Wanganui District Court on the charges on October 30.
