Charles Goldie's final painting sold for $350,000 plus buyers' premium at an auction in Wellington tonight.

The painting was Goldie's A Noble Relic of a Noble Race oil portrait of Ngati Manawa and Tuhoe priest and chief Wharekauri Tahuna, believed to have been aged 102 at the time of painting.

Although Tahuna sat for the portrait in 1908, the work remained unfinished until 1941, near the end of Goldie's life.

Dunbar Sloane Jnr confirmed the painting had sold at the company's auction for $350,000 plus a buyer's premium of 12.5 per cent, a total of $404,000.
