A talkback radio caller who met Nai Yin Xue before a court appearance has alleged the fugitive told him he was going to kill his wife.
Police this afternoon issued a warrant for Mr Xue's arrest after confirming a body found in a car yesterday was that of An An Liu, Mr Xue's wife and the mother of abandoned toddler Qian Xun.
Mrs Xue, 27, died "during a violent episode", according to preliminary results from a post-mortem examination carried out this morning, police said.
On Newstalk ZB today, caller "John" from Auckland, claimed he met Mrs Xue's husband at a court holding cell - before Mr Xue appeared on family violence charges, including beating up his wife and breaching a protection order.
John claimed Mr Xue told him he was going to kill his wife and then leave with his daughter. He told Newstalk ZB he could not believe those events appeared to have happened.
Formally identifying An An Liu's body this afternoon, Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Scott said police were now focusing on finding Nai Yin, and had a warrant out for his arrest for her murder and the abduction of their daughter.
Three-year-old Qian, nicknamed Pumpkin by Australian police remains in foster care in Melbourne.
