A man shot after a high-speed car chase through Rotorua on Wednesday has died.
Police said the man arrested in connection with the incident would now be charged with murder.
The dead man was Peter John Franklyn, 43, of Rotorua.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Loper of Rotorua police said a post mortem would be carried out in Auckland tomorrow.
The investigation was continuing and police were still interviewing witnesses, he said.
They were appealing for anyone else who saw the incident involving the two vehicles -- a white ute towing a trailer and a dark coloured 4x4.
Turangi man Joseph Russell Rewiri, 45, appeared in Rotorua District Court yesterday charged with assaulting Mr Franklyn, carrying a .32 calibre semi-automatic Mauser firearm, and possession of cannabis for supply.
He did not enter pleas and was remanded in custody to appear again on July 3 for a pre-depositions hearing, with depositions to follow on July 20.
Mr Loper Rewiri would appear in Rotorua District Court on Tuesday morning to be charged with murder.
