New Zealanders dig deep for Tongan community

New Zealanders are digging deep to help members of the Tongan community involved in the deadly bus crash in Gisborne on Christmas Eve.

More than $30,000 has been donated to help the Mailefihi Siu'ilikutapu College Brass Band, who were due to play at a church service on Christmas Day.

Sione Taumalolo, 11, and Talita Moimoi Fifita, 33, were killed in the crash.

A Givealittle page set up for the group shortly afterwards has this morning raised more than $31,300.

The fundraising effort was started by local woman Kristina Williams, who was one of the first people at the crash.

She wrote that the funds would help the 46 people injured victims.

"They only have the clothes they were wearing at the time of the accident. All their belongings are trapped and strewn down a steep bank.

"As one of the first on the scene of the accident, I was in admiration of this group's composure, attitude and thanks towards one another and their helpers.''

Many people left messages for those involved and the families of those killed.

"Very sorry to hear of this tragedy on Christmas. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all,'' one family wrote.

The New Brighton Silver Band wrote: "Our brass band in Christchurch is thinking of you all.''

Another donor said: "Thinking of you at this tragic time. We visited your Vava'u and loved your hospitality. Be brave.''

The bodies of the two victims are to be returned to their home in Tonga, where their final services will be held.
