A new report shows New Zealand is the second most expensive place to get childcare in the world, behind only Britain.

OECD research suggests it's twice as expensive here as it is in Australia.

New Zealand Education Institute President Louise Green said unfortunately costs deter mothers from going back to work quickly.

She said the high prices may be down to our high proportion of private childcare providers seeking profits.
