Just hours after sick 12-year-old Malachi Agnew appealed to meet the Prime Minister he received a very special call.

The Whakatane boy spends much of his time between Tauranga, Waikato and Starship Hospitals because of numerous medical conditions.

He told the Herald yesterday afternoon that he had created a bucket list to help him through and at the top of that list was to meet Jacinda Ardern.

This morning, his mother Julie Agnew posted on Facebook saying Malachi had received a phone call from Ardern.

"He was hopping from one foot to the other and beamed from ear to ear. They chatted for 15 minutes about all sorts of things and a meeting is being arranged.

"He is so excited. She has spoken to the Defence Minister arranging a few other things as well.

"She was truly amazing, having only heard about it last night she tracked us down and rang immediately arranging a call with Malachi this morning. Just blown away!

"She was so lovely and down to Earth to chat to, but a bit surreal putting her name into my contacts list."

Malachi's first hospital admission was at 6 weeks old and by age 4 he had his first major brain surgery to treat Chiari Malformation - structural defects in the base of the skull and cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance.

He also has intracranial pressure, migraines, scoliosis, epilepsy, asthma and some vertebrae were fused, which now pinch nerves. He has to be fed through a port in his stomach because his stomach muscles are too weak to digest food and his body does not absorb enough nutrients.

Now his muscles are starting to degenerate and doctors are doing tests to find out what's causing it so they can treat it before it gets to his heart.

Malachi woke up in Starship's high dependency unit recently, looked at all the machines he was hooked to and said there were some things in life he did not want to miss out on. That's when he started his bucket list.

Risk of death: 'Since I was 10-years-old I was a medical mystery'

16 Aug 06:19 PM

He has 74 things on his list.

Of his attempt to meet Ardern, Malachi said: "I feel proud to call her the Prime Minister of New Zealand and I like what she does and how she helps low-income people. Because of what she did with the mental health and the low-income people and all the decisions she's making, they are really cool ones.

"I would tell her all that and say thank you and shake her hand and thank her for all the things."

Since the Herald story, generous Kiwis have contacted the family willing to help Malachi fulfil his list.

Malachi's aunt has set up a Givealittle page to help the family gather the money to get the equipment he needs -
such as a pressure bed and a hydrotherapy pool but also to help tick off some of his bucket list items.
