New Year to come in with a bang

Aucklanders' eyes will rise skyward at midnight to see what promises to be a spectacular fireworks display on the city's iconic landmark, the Sky Tower.

Master pyrotechnician Martin van Tiel has set up the Sky Tower display as well as one which will operate from two barges in the Waitemata Harbour.

The displays should go for 10 minutes from midnight, said Dr van Tiel.

Sky City spokeswoman Connie Sprague said over seven hundred kilos of fireworks will be set off from the Sky Tower.

She expects around 40 thousand people to visit Sky City and many more will watch the fireworks from around Auckland.
