New walk for playground

An inaugural family walk to raise money for Featherston's Meta Riddiford Kindergarten will take place next Saturday.

Event co-ordinator Karyn Wilkins said the money raised would go towards a much-needed new surface for the kindergarten playground area.

"It's all wood chips at the moment, they all need replacing to the proper safety mats or increasing the depth of it because it's getting a bit worn in places," Mrs Wilkins said.

She said the work would cost about $20,000, "which is a lot of sausage sizzles".

Mrs Wilkins hoped about 100 people will attend and wanted the event to become an annual fundraiser.

"I'm hoping it will grow in future years to be a major fundraiser.

"We're wanting to market it to outside of Featherston so that would be a bit of tourism, financial and economical benefit [for the area]."

She said the event would also encourage families to get active.

"There are some beautiful walks around the Featherston area and for children as well, the course is perfect for buggies or kids on bikes so the whole family can get involved.

The 5km walk, or run, is based at the Sports Stadium and will go along Underhill Rd.

Entry is $5 or $15 a family, children under two are free.
