New 'train surfing' video surfaces on Facebook

Another video has surfaced on social media showing two people "train surfing" off the back of a Wellington commuter train.

The video, which has appeared on Facebook, shows two men wearing clothing over their faces to disguise themselves, and filming, from their point of view, as they ride along the back of the train.

NZME. News Service have chosen not to publish the video, after concerns from police and KiwiRail that it would encourage 'copycat' behaviour.

Today, a police spokesman said they were aware of the video, but were unsure as to when it was shot.

"It is pretty hard to tell when it was filmed, but we are just assessing basically what that means at the moment, and whether we can identify anybody from it."

Meanwhile police were still working to identify two teenagers who were filmed hanging off the back of a commuter train in Wellington on Sunday.

The footage was taken by a car passenger as the train sped alongside the Eastern Hutt Rd, in Upper Hutt, Wellington.

Police said they were still working to identify those who were involved, by scanning CCTV footage from the Greater Wellington Regional Council's rail monitoring centre.

They were also appealing to witnesses to come forward with any information they may have.

KiwiRail said its main concern continued to be the safety of those involved.

"The people in these videos put their lives at serious risk when they climbed onto the outside of a moving train. Their actions could have easily resulted in a fatality."

KiwiRail said although these kinds of incidents were rare, they were still concerning.

"We do not believe incidents of this kind are widespread at all, however trespassers on the rail corridor is a significant issue and we will continue to work hard to make people aware of the dangers when they trespass on the rail corridor - the only legal and safe place to cross a rail track is at a designated rail crossing and we implore people to think of their own safety when around rail tracks."
