'New tests needed' to solve 4-yr-old death say police

Police investigating the death of a four-year-old girl say new tests are needed to solve the mystery of the tragedy.

The child was found dead at an Onehunga house at 4am on Friday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Baldwin, Auckland City Police, said a post mortem examination was carried out yesterday, but was inconclusive. Further test results are expected on Tuesday.

"The death of any child is tragic and we are doing everything we can to support the child's family," he said.

"The investigation is continuing and will be reassessed on Tuesday when we get the test results."

Police had tried to contact the girl's father, believed to be in the United Kingdom, but had not had any success.

The girl's mother is understood to have called police and was taken away for medical treatment for superficial injuries.

The child's name will not be released until all next of kin have been advised.
