Waikato University has introduced two unique scholarship schemes to encourage and support students aiming for the top, particularly those combining academic achievement, and sporting prowess or artistic performance.
The Tearaway Waikato University Scholarships provide $3000 for high school students who do well in NCEA Level 3.
The Sir Edmund HillaryScholarships provide support and coaching structures, in partnership with community groups, for sporting or artistic performers who also excel academically.
Waikato University outgoing Vice-Chancellor Bryan Gould believes the scholarships will become New Zealand's equivalent of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarships. "Many high achievers fail to reach their full potential because they are forced to focus their efforts at a very early stage – to choose between their study or their sports or artistic interests. Our new programme will help students to continue delivering all-round excellence."
Hillary scholars, who can be new or existing students, will receive a full-fee scholarship, personal academic support, coaching and training in their sport or art from community-based partner institutions, and a range of other benefits.
"They are a great opportunity for young people who have demonstrated all-round ability. These scholarships will support a new generation of leaders by creating pathways for exceptional New Zealanders," says Professor Gould.
This initiative runs alongside another important new scholarship fund this year, the Tearaway Waikato University Scholarships for first-year students, worth $3000 towards fees or halls of residence costs.
Applying for the Tearaway Scholarship is automatic on application to the university and there no limit on the number available.
To receive a scholarship students need 60 credits or more at NCEA Level 3 or 4 in no more than four NZQA approved subjects, with at least 14 credits in each subject, and gain University Entrance. Recipients must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents and enrol in a full-time full-year programme at the university. There are also Tearaway Scholarships for schools sitting Cambridge International Examinations and International Baccalaureate. For scholarship details visit www.waikato.ac.nz or call 0800 WAIKATO.
