New passing lanes open on SH2

There has been some good news for commuters between Napier and Gisborne.

The first of nine new passing lanes along State Highway 2 has been opened.

The remaining eight will be opened by February.

National MP Chris Tremain said the new lanes will help improve safety along the notorious stretch of road.

"Reducing that driver frustration, which again goes to the heart of safety.

"It also helps some of the commuters get past some of those big trucks, and get down to Napier from Gisborne a bit quicker."
