New man takes racing club's reins

Masterton printer David Greenlees was elected president at the Masterton Racing Club's annual meeting.

Mr Greenlees will succeed outgoing president Richard White.

Retired teacher, radio racing tipster and club historian Trevor Martin was made a life member. Mr Martin has had a long association with the committee, including a stint as the club's vice-president, and his work in promoting the club includes on-course duties on race day.

Yearly awards at the recent meeting were:

Broodmare of the Year: Yeah Nah (dam of Viadana), from Little Avondale Stud.

Horse of the Year: Cauthen.

Trainer of the Year: Kylie Little (seven winners).

Track rider of the Year: Christina Backstrom.

During the last racing season, Opaki-trained horses won 28 races and the Life Flight Trust benefited to the tune of $3400 from on-course donations gathered on the club's last race day of the season.

At the annual meeting it was decided that club membership would remain at $45, being for a member and a guest ticket.

It was decided that subsidised members' days at other meetings would be introduced next season.
