A LANDMARK community help centre has become home for Masterton's Lighthouse Church.
The Sedgley Family Centre in Intermediate Street is now in the hands of the church with a new auditorium-cum- youth hall with an attached cafe now under construction.
One of the church leaders, Peter Munn, said that after nine years
of holding Sunday meetings in the Makoura College hall it was nice to have " a home".
Mr Munn said the auditorium would be used for Sunday meetings and everybody would be encouraged to stay on and socialise, now that there would be a cafe available.
"The existing rooms can be used for clubs, for youth group meetings and the like we needed the auditorium for the main church functions."
Construction began about two months ago and he said all going well "we should be in early in the new year".
And it will be very much a combined effort to finish the new hall with church members with the required skills pitching in to do the painting and wiring.
The former Sedgley Boys Home was opened on 6ha of land at Solway known as Sedgley in 1926 when the Anglican Church's original boys' home in lower Hutt became overcrowded.
In 1939 a new building was opened on the site and housed many boys until 1988 when the home closed because of falling numbers.
The home was then re-established as a family support centre designed to help families under stress.
