Nelson man killed in level crossing collision

A Nelson man was killed this afternoon after the vehicle he was driving collided with a train at Rangiora, North Canterbury.

The 52-year-old died at the scene.

Police said the collision happened just after midday at a stop sign-controlled level crossing near the intersection of Dunlops Rd and Railway Rd.

Acting Senior Sergeant Brent Register, of Rangiora police, said the dead man was the sole occupant of a van that was shunted 300m from the crossing.

Mr Register said the man's name wouldn't be released until his next of kin were notified.

The police serious crash unit was investigating.
