Nelson crash: Pedestrian seriously injured after being hit by car

A pedestrian has been seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of a busy arterial road through Nelson.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said a portion of State Highway 6, which runs through Tahunanui Drive, is expected to be closed for several hours while police conduct a serious crash investigation.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the intersection of Parkers Rd and Tahunanui Drive just after 1.10pm after reports of a car hitting a pedestrian in the suburb of Tāhunanui.

The pedestrian received serious-to-critical injuries from the collision, a police spokesperson said.

Traffic diversions are now in place, with the road closed to motorists while emergency services respond to the incident.

“Continue to follow directions of emergency services on-site or use an alternative route,” NZTA said.

“Allow additional time for travel this afternoon through the area.”

Hato Hone St John said it responded to the collision with one ambulance, one rapid response unit and one manager.

“Our crews assessed and treated one patient who was transported to Nelson Hospital in a serious condition,” a spokesperson said.
