A Givealittle page was started recently to support the family while they were in Auckland to be at Mateo’s bedside.
On Wednesday, a message was posted on St Patrick’s School’s Facebook community page announcing their “deep sadness” at the loss.
“After becoming very unwell, Mateo was taken to Starship Hospital, where he was surrounded by love and care. Our thoughts and prayers are with his whānau at this time. We also hold his little brother, Montiel, especially close in our hearts,” the post said.
The school asked those who could to pray for his family.
“This is a time to come together, to support one another and to show compassion. Please reach out if your child or family needs support – we are here for you.”
Older brother Miguel said in a Facebook post: “I still can’t accept how I was right next to you a couple weeks ago eating dinner. You were trying hard to use chopsticks to eat your noodles and you were struggling.
“I will always remember our last fist bump and hug. Mate, you will always be in my heart, I really wish we could have grown up together.”
