Cabinet Minister and Napier MP Chris Tremain has confirmed that he will stand down from Parliament next year.
Mr Tremain, who holds the Local Government and Internal Affairs portfolios, said in a statement this afternoon that he would not seek re-election in 2014.
"My family has been a huge partof my decision. I have three children finishing high school and I want to devote more time to them before they leave home," he said.
He added: "I have made this decision with my wife and communicated it to the Prime Minister a fortnight ago. I have decided to announce it today to allow the National Party time to find a suitable replacement for next year's election."
Mr Tremain said that in his final year in Parliament he would prioritise the second round of local government reforms, gambling reform, fire legislation and the ICT Strategy and Action Plan.
He has been an MP since 2005, when he won the Napier seat for National for the first time in 50 years.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister John Key announced today the Christchurch East by-election triggered by the resignation of Labour's Lianne Dalziel would take place on Saturday November 30.
Mr Key said today that he expected "one or two" other MPs would step down before the next election.
