Names of two crash victims to be released today

Police are investigating after two dead bodies were found in a car which had crashed off the road into a paddock in Northland.

Police were called to the accident about 4.45pm yesterday, off State Highway 1, near Kawakawa, in Northland.

Both occupants of the vehicle were dead when emergency services arrived at the scene, Kawakawa police said in a statement.

They could not say when the accident happened.

The vehicle had left the road, gone down a bank and hit a tree, before coming to rest on its roof.

No other vehicles were involved.

Police said they were still working on formally identifying the victims and notifying their families.

Their names would be released later today, police said.
