Two Whanganui sisters have been left shaken after an object was thrown at their car windscreen, narrowly missing them.
Violet and Charity Teka were driving back to Whanganui from Palmerston North on the evening of September 10 with their brother and Violet's 5-year-old son and 1-month-old daughter.
When they were at Kaitoke a heavy object hit their windscreen, thrown by someone from a car travelling in the opposite direction. The windscreen shattered, showering Violet, who was driving, with small bits of glass.
"I was able to pull over and put on my hazard lights. This guy pulled over to make sure we were okay," Violet said.
The heavy object was never found, but Violet and Charity believe it was a bottle. Charity tried to look for the car, but it was difficult because it was dark. She thinks it was a grey car.
Charity posted about the incident on a public Facebook page. It got many outraged responses, including from Andrew Spooner, who was driving a bus along the same stretch of road. His bus's windscreen was also hit by a heavy object.
"I was really shaken up," Charity said. "If it had been thrown any harder it would have gone through the windscreen and right into Violet's face.
"It could have caused a serious crash, and whoever did this wasn't thinking about what they were doing."
Violet said the incident had left her angry - especially as she will have to find $350 for a new windscreen.
"My son was very scared, and didn't want to get in the car for a while after that."
The sisters reported the incident to the police, but have not heard anything further.
"It would be nice if whoever did this came forward," Violet said.
"We'd had a nice family trip to Palmerston North and it just turned into this horrible thing that really scared my son."
