A man has been charged with murder after the death of a man at a Hamilton flat yesterday.
Emergency services went to Wha St, Frankton, about 4.45pm, in response to a report of an assault.
Detective Sergeant Daryl Smith said a 38-year-old man was found lying critically injured on anupstairs walkway of the two-storey accommodation block.
"As St John staff attempted to treat the victim for his injuries the man died. A 28-year-old man located in an adjoining flat was initially arrested for assault but has since been charged with murder," he said.
The man will appear in the Hamilton District Court today.
Detective Sergeant Smith said a scene guard was in place overnight and the occupants of six of the eight flats in the building had been found alternative accommodation.
"The priorities for the inquiry team today are speaking to witnesses and completing the scene examination which will be assisted by the arrival of forensic experts from Auckland."
Detective Sergeant Smith said the family of the victim has been informed and carried out a blessing at the murder scene overnight.
The man's body remained at the site overnight and a post-mortem examination will be carried out once it is removed.
