Multiple complaints from tenants in Auckland apartment building

Anti-social behaviour at an inner-city apartment block partly owned by Housing New Zealand has led to 42 complaints, two assaults and a near-fatal stabbing in two years.

The state housing provider owns 40 of the 278 apartments at Imperial Gardens on Auckland's Hobson St. Residents said they were too scared to use lifts, spa pools, the swimming pool and the gymnasium because of anti-social behaviour.

The body corporate has increased security and provided a full-time guard on site to reduce issues.

Information released to the Herald on Sunday under the Official Information Act showed complaints included:

• A tenant vomiting from the balcony.

• Charges laid after a tenant's partner bit a security guard.

• A security guard assaulted when investigating a noise complaint.

• A tenant exposing himself to the building manager.

• A stabbing in the foyer in November last year involved a Housing NZ tenant.

Julian Silver from Housing NZ said 13 of the complaints related to five tenancies that had now ended.

Twenty-nine complaints were for existing tenancies.

One owner-occupier questioned why high-risk tenants were housed in the city with "drugs, drink and temptation on their doorstep".
