Mt Albert party chaos: Teen faces charges over assault and stolen car after street fracas

Police have charged a teenager with aggravated assault and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle after an Auckland house party spiralled out of control.

Witnesses said up to 100 people gathered at the Mt Albert party on March 27 where six young people were injured, amid reports that machetes were present, and a car was driven at partygoers.

Detective Senior Sergeant Anthony Darvill said a 17-year-old male was charged with wounding, aggravated assault, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and being an unlicensed driver.

He will appear in the Auckland Youth Court on April 9.

“Inquiries remain ongoing to identify others involved and hold them to account for their behaviour,” said Darvill.

Neighbours of the short-term rental on Phyllis St said the street was filled with drunk “kids” screaming, crying and throwing bottles.

One neighbour said she saw a partygoer, who appeared to have been stabbed, seek refuge at a house across the road.

Dozens of police officers, ambulance staff and firefighters rushed to the incident, which spread across several streets.

Footage a neighbour shared with the Herald showed youths being chased on the street, with some struck with long objects and kicked to the ground.

Auckland councillors condemned the behaviour.

Albert-Eden-Puketāpapa ward representative Julie Fairey said the footage gave a sense of the chaos and violence.

“I hope videos like this one help police and other agencies to identify those who need to be held accountable, and I encourage others who have evidence to get in touch with the police.”
