A 21-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a truck in the Wellington suburb of Melling today.
The dead man was from Upper Hutt, and his next of kin were still to be advised of his death, Detective Sergeant Grant Atkin of Lower Hutt police said in a statement.
The collision happened at the intersection of State Highway 2 and the Melling Bridge.
The crash was one of three which kept Wellington emergency services busy this morning and threw rush hour traffic into chaos.
The most spectacular of the three saw a truck roll on State Highway 1 in Ngauranga Gorge. The busy southbound lanes were not closed, but "rubbernecking" drivers reduced traffic to a crawl, Sergeant Colin Graham of Wellington police told NZPA.
The condition of the driver who had to be released from his cab was not known.
Traffic from the Kapiti Coast had already been delayed by a non-injury crash at Paremata.
The fatal crash in the Hutt Valley also caused a major snarl-up.
