Motorcyclist killed in multi-car crash

A motorcyclist has died after a crash involving a number of cars.

At just after 5pm today, police were called to the scene on State Highway One, at the farming settlement of Waianakarua in North Otago.

A south-bound Toyota collided with a north-bound motorcycle and two cars after overtaking a few cars.

The rider of the motorbike died at the scene.

He was the only person on board the machine.

The driver and passenger of the Toyota were taken to Oamaru and Dunedin hospitals respectively with what were described as moderate injuries.

Police are asking for witnesses to the crash to call Oamaru police on (03) 433 1400.

The road is closed and detours are in place but they are not suitable for heavy motor vehicles.

Police said the scene will closed for examination for the next few hours at least.
