A motorcyclist has escaped police in Mount Maunganui today.

Police briefly pursued the motorcyclist before they abandoned the pursuit because of high speed.

Police Northern Communications shift manager said the pursuit began on Marine Parade but was called of "seconds later".

The motorcyclist was described as wearing a blue helmet.

"We didn't get any information about him apart from that it was a motorbike," he said.

"He went past police at a quick speed."
