Motorcyclist dies in crash after fleeing police

A motorcyclist who died in Hamilton this morning fled police earlier in the night.

Police said the 30-year-old motorcyclist died on Baverstock Rd in Rotokauri in a crash in the early hours of the morning.

The road was closed for several hours as the police serious crash unit investigates.

Police said they now believed the motorcyclist had earlier fled police.

However, at the time of the crash he was not the subject of a pursuit, police said.

Waikato District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Freda Grace said any road death was a tragedy and police wished to extend their sympathy to the man's family.

No further information would be released until police had notified next of kin.
