Mother doubts search will pay off

The mother of dead Auckland woman Jane Furlong is not convinced police will find anything connected with her daughter's murder at her last known address.

Investigators, including scientists from Environmental Science and Research, returned to the property in Heretaunga Ave, Onehunga, yesterday after receiving new information in the 20-year-old case.

Judith Furlong was advised of the search but was not told what officers were looking for, or anything about the nature of the new information.

She said she was not convinced they would find anything, given 20 years had passed since her daughter was killed. But she remained hopeful that the mystery would be solved eventually.

Ms Furlong was last seen in Karangahape Rd in Auckland in May 1993.

In March, police offered a $50,000 reward for information on the case.

Police are expected to be at the Onehunga property for several days.

Detective Inspector Mark Benefield said: "We're very encouraged by the fact that, even after Jane's disappearance and death 20 years ago and the eventual discovery of her skeletal remains at Port Waikato more than 12 months ago, the mystery of her death is still at the forefront of a number of people's minds and they're contacting us."
