More human remains found on Timaru beach

More human remains have been found on a South Island beach today after a human leg bone was found inside a boot yesterday.

Remains were found on a beach near Washdydke, just north of Timaru, by a member of the public yesterday and handed in to police.

Search and rescue teams scouring the coastline today found "further human remains", police confirmed.

"Police are at this stage unable to identify the remains, but a process to do this is underway," a police spokesman said.

All of the remains have now been taken to Christchurch for an autopsy and DNA testing.

The grisly finds are not thought to be suspicious.

It comes after Timaru man Darryl McNee, 44, was reported missing on May 1.

A Mazda 323 station wagon belonging to Mr McNee was found at the end of Connolly Rd, Seadown - near to where the human remains have washed up.

Police said at the time there were concerns for his wellbeing.

However today, police wouldn't comment if the finds were related to the Mr McNee missing persons inquiry.

"We will be conducting a range of inquiries as part of the work to identify the remains," the spokesman added.
