The body of a missing boatie has been recovered more than a week after he went missing in Lake Wanaka.
Trevor Hawke, 70, was sailing with a friend on Nov. 17 when he fell overboard when the boat lurched. He was wearing a life jacket but it was not inflated.
His companion circled the area looking for Hawke but could not find him.
Police Search and Rescue coordinator senior constable Emma Fleming said today sonar teams located Mr. Hawke's body south of Eely Point at a depth of 47 metres. The body was successfully recovered today.
"This has been a tragic loss for the Hawke family and it is a relief to be able to return Trevor to his family and friends," she said. "I would like to thank them for their patience and support of the search operation during this anxious time."
Hawke was a founding member of the Wanaka Yacht Club and regularly took young sailors out on the water for lessons.
"He was very fit and healthy," friend Geoff Dickey had previously told the Herald on Sunday. "He covered all roles in the club and was still fishing, still sailing, still hunting."
