Missing elderly Hamilton man found safe and well

An elderly man that was missing in Hamilton has been found safe and well.

Earlier this morning police asked for the public's assistance in looking for 82-year-old Graeme Thatcher, who had gone missing from his home address at about 2.30am.

He was last seen wearing blue pyjamas and grey slippers and was possibly thought to have been heading to the Jansen Park area.

However, police located Thatcher about 7.30am in the grounds of Hillcrest High School.

"Police would like to thank members of the public, and the volunteers from Search and Rescue New Zealand who searched over night for our missing man this morning," they said.

Earlier today, Sergeant Vince Ranger, of Waikato Police, urged people in the Hillcrest area and suburbs to check their backyards, sheds and other outbuildings in case Thatcher had taken shelter there.

"Thatcher is quite mobile, so he may have travelled quite a distance. Public in the Hillcrest area will possibly see police and SAR in their area today and they may be looking to search properties," he said.

"We are working hard to locate Thatcher and even the smallest piece of information could help, so please don't hesitate to contact us. If you see him, or have seen him, please contact police immediately."
