Two people have been charged after a stolen late-model Mercedes being chased by police crashed in the Auckland suburb of Remuera this morning.
Residents were woken by a loud noise as the car lost control and ploughed through a brick fence and into a power pole about 3.15am on OrakeiRd, near the intersection of Remuera Rd.
Senior Sergeant Greg Sowter said a 32-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman tried to flee the scene, but were quickly apprehended due to being injured.
"They didn't get very far," he said.
The car was detected by police on Shore Rd, and the pursuit began from there, he said.
A police spokeswoman confirmed this afternoon that the man had been charged with five offences and the woman with one.
He was charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle; failing to stop; dangerous driving; possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug utensils.
The woman was charged with unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle.
They will appear in Auckland District Court later this week and were both remanded in custody.
The sirens and lights of seven police cars and a St John ambulance lit up the scene early this morning, as concerned residents came into the street.
