"She would've loved it," Gary said.
Alan added: "She would've been up there with us."
He said being an All Black had been a great privilege.
"I'm very honoured. And to receive it alongside my brother makes it even better."
Gary Whetton played his debut test against South Africa at Eden Park in 1981. He played a total of 58 tests and was captain in 15. Younger brother Alan got his first test cap against Australia in July 1984 in Sydney. He played 35 test matches.
The brothers - the only All Blacks twins - were part of the 1987 team which won the Rugby World Cup.
Asked how they felt about the All Blacks' chance of winning the trophy this year, older brother Gary was quick to answer.
"I think it's our time. Picking the team - the people who are doing the choosing are a lot more wiser. It's our time."
