Automatic. As I'm in the car a lot, I like it to be as stress-free and relaxing as possible. (That is not always possible in Auckland.)
Favourite car colour?
Black is my preferred colour because it just shows the lines better.
Your first car?
A British racing green Triumph 2000.
Your dream car?
I'm going to be greedy and go for two but they complement each other in a ying and yang way. My everyday car would be the new BMW i8. This amazing new model is a true game-changer in terms of sustainable motoring. For the weekends, a 1957 Chevy Bel Air complete with the number plate I bought 20 years ago, RKNROL.
Who taught you to drive?
My stepfather taught me to drive when I was 14 years old. He was a driving instructor, so was a great teacher. I got my full licence two weeks after my 15th birthday and I got my first ticket 21 years later.
Most memorable road trip?
I have had a few but I recently did the Swamp Run at Mangawhai. I'm a huge fan of'50s cars and I was taken in a'57 Bel Air. It just felt fantastic. I was stoked when they let me drive it. I will have a hot rod as a hobby one day.
Music as you drive?
It all depends on the length of the trip. I have some great rock music on the iPod, which Bluetooths through to the car's system. I love the music of Bruce Springsteen and Rod Stewart, and listen to Coast and Newstalk radio stations for shorter trips.
What's a great day trip out of Auckland?
There is nothing better than rounding the corner at the top of the hill and looking down to Piha. For international visitors, that drive is a must. I also love the drive out to Matakana for the markets and Omaha Beach (just don't forget to pay the road toll).
Does what people drive influence how you perceive them?
It shouldn't but I think everyone is guilty of stereotyping through either the car that someone drives or, probably more likely, the way they drive it.
Would you rather drive in Auckland or take public transport?
I would rather drive. Until it takes me less than one hour-plus to get to places like Parnell by public transport, then I'm not risking it.
Who else is allowed to drive your car?
Anyone over the age of 25. I'm not too fussed about that. In fact, I like them to experience the car; they may end up buying one!
Do you have a special number plate?
Yes, I do, although it's not on the car. But back in the'90s I bought a number plate with RKNROL on it.
How often do you clean your car?
Weekly.
Pet hate on the road?
People who don't raise their hand in their rear view mirror to thank you for letting them in. I know it's a small thing but it has a big meaning.
