McArthur next ambassador to Japan

John McArthur is New Zealand's next ambassador to Japan.

Foreign Affairs Minister Phil Goff said the appointment of Dr McArthur, a career diplomat, came at a significant time in the relationship between the two countries.

"Japan's economy is on the road to recovery. Competition for Japan's attention, and a share in its huge market and investment flows, is intensifying," he said.

"We need to make sure New Zealand is well placed to benefit from the opportunities available."
