May best tweet win, says Goff

As opposition leader Phil Goff prepares for New Zealand's biggest popularity contest at the November 26 general election, he's entered into another race with Trade Me founder Sam Morgan.

The pair have made a wager to see who reaches 5000 Twitter followers first.

The challenge was set by Morgan via the social networking site last Saturday.

"I have 4588 Twitter followers. @phil - goff has 4629. Feels like a race," he said.

Goff replied two days later: "@samfromwgtn Game on! Last to 5000 followers owes the other one a coffee - make mine a Latte!"

The banter continued with Morgan asking for cup of tea.

"You're on. A race it is. I feel a loss coming on. Just in case: English Breakfast Tea."

As of Friday, Goff was leading the charge with 4750 followers and Morgan marginally behind with 4704 followers.

Goff has some catching up to do to reach his political rival John Key who has 29,204 followers.

Goff told the Herald on Sunday the bet was a "bit of fun".

Morgan could not be reached for comment. His father, economist Gareth Morgan, said he was in Cambodia.
