In its heyday there were about 100 members of the then all-male club, he said.
"It was started up in England by people who were musicians who wanted to entertain and have something to do in their spare time .... it was exclusively all male until more recent years when ladies started joining as well. We practise two or three times a week together ... there are a lot of other musical groups around town now so our club has slowly been diminishing over time".
Sunday's event, the first show of the year, promised to be a trip back in time musically, he said.
"It's going to be something quite different. There will be singing and skits and all that sort of thing. Lots of entertainment, a chance to sing-a-long and great company thrown in. There will be a lot of the old English songs played, taking people back in time. It's going to be a lot of fun."
The Variety Show gets underway at 2pm Sunday, April 27, in the Masterton Savage Club Hall at 10 Albert St. Entry is $5 and afternoon tea is on offer.
