Masterton's voter turnout decreased from 54 to 49 per cent, while South Wairarapa's voter turnout decreased from 52 to 40 per cent.
Mr Yule said it was likely that voting turnout would not increase initially but that selected local government areas would at least have the option to vote online. "If Masterton's registration is accepted in the trial next year, there may be some costs involved, but they will be as minimal as possible and the council can choose to withdraw," Mr Yule said.
The Local Government New Zealand Cabinet is likely to determine whether Masterton will be eligible for the online voting trial between 4-6 weeks from now.
Masterton Mayor Lyn Patterson says the online voting system is likely to encourage younger voters in the district and will be beneficial to the town.
