Residents of the seaside settlement of Mangawhai, north of Auckland, are cleaning up this morning after heavy overnight rain caused severe flooding.
In the early hours of this morning, local firefighters helped residents move their possessions to high ground after floodwaters engulfed some homes.
Fire officials said some homes and batches in the settlement were damaged by the floodwaters flowing through them.
Mangawhai police said an extremely high tide in the nearby Mangawhai Heads estuary made the situation worse.
An 11m launch also broke its mooring in the strong onshore winds and was washed ashore at Mangawhai Heads this morning.
