A man is lucky to be alive after he was nearly crushed by a concrete slab at a demolition site this afternoon.
The 50-year-old was trapped beneath the slab at a site on Whittaker Place in Central Auckland.
St John was called to the site at about 2.20pm and the
fire service also attended.
Airbags were used to free the man from beneath the slab before he was taken to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition.
The site's manager Kevin Kim of cornerstone demolition said the concrete was being pulled down at the time of the accident, but the curved design of the slab meant the worker was trapped in a cavity.
