Man stabbed with broken bottle at Christmas party

A Christmas function turned nasty in Whangarei last night when a man was attacked by two others and stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle.

The wound narrowly missed the victim's carotid artery, police said.

Officers were called to the incident at Port Whangarei about 10.30pm yesterday, after a fight broke out at a Christmas party being held a local business , Inspector Darroch Todd of police northern communications said.

Two men attacked the victim, aged in his late-30s, one of them stabbing him in the neck with the broken bottle.

The injured man was taken to Whangarei Hospital where his condition overnight was described as stable.

Two men were arrested in connection with the incident.
