A man has had surgery today after he was shot in Hamilton early this morning.

The man arrived at Waikato Hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg not long after residents on Higgins Road, Dinsdale heard a loud explosion.

Police were called to the house about 5am and cordoned it off.

They believe the two incidents are connected.

Waikato Senior Sergeant Andrew O'Reilly said the investigation was in the early stages but there did not appear to be any risk to the public.

Police had not spoken to the victim, who received a single gunshot to the leg. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
