A man involved in a crash which claimed the life of his dog is undergoing surgery as he continues to battle serious injuries.
The man remains in a serious but stable condition in Waikato Hospital today.
The 67-year-old suffered critical head and arm injuries after the vehicle he was drivingand another car collided in Maramarua at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Kopuku Rd about 2.30pm.
The woman driver of the other car was taken to Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition.
The man's dog, Bella, a Huntaway cross, suffered a broken leg, injured back and a degloved paw, after she was thrown from the vehicle on to the road.
The crash happened at the intersection of SH2 and Kopuku Rd, Maramarua.
Auckland Hospital heart failure nurse specialist Melinda Copley was one of the first to the scene with her cardiologist partner Rob Doughty and the pair helped the injured.
Copley then sat with Bella for about an hour as they waited for a vet.
Bella survived the night but was put down by the vet on Monday.
