Man pulled from burning van now in critical condition

A Rakaia man is in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital after being pulled from a burning van in the town last night.

The Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a property in Rolleston Street shortly after 8pm and firefighters found the 47-year-old man had already been pulled from the vehicle and wrapped in a wet blanket by residents.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter took the man to Christchurch Hospital with serious burns to the majority of his body. By late this afternoon he was still listed as in a critical condition.

Police could not be contacted for comment and no further details were available this evening.
