A Canadian tourist suffered serious facial injuries when a fence post smashed through the windscreen of his car in a crash on Hamilton's southern outskirts last night.
Emergency services were called to the scene at a farm about 11.50pm, Senior Constable Graham Fitzpatrick said.
"The crash appears to have involveda single northbound Ford Telstar station-wagon coming down a hill failing to negotiate a sign-posted 85km/h bend and leaving the road and crashing through a fence," Mr Fitzpatrick said.
"Unfortunately for the 26-year-old Canadian male driving the car, when his vehicle crashed through the fence a post smashed through the windscreen causing him serious facial injuries."
Mr Fitzpatrick said the man was taken to Waikato Hospital in a status one condition.
"It's too early to say what may have caused the crash but the man was fortunate that a woman heard what had happened and raised the alarm," he said.
Police appealed for anyone in the area at the time who may have seen what happened to contact Mr Fitzpatrick via the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200.
